Suffolk Stour

Key Information
River Layout
The Suffolk Stour winds beneath the A134, flowing for approximately 500 yards before passing under the Anchor Bridge in Nayland village. This section is exclusively reserved for Nayland residents, thanks to the Village Conservation Society's purchase in 2003. Below the Anchor pub, fishing resumes where the river becomes fast and shallow, ideal for dace. The river continues past the Horkesley Hole, where it slows and deepens, creating a pleasant spot for anglers to target roach, dace, chub, and gudgeon.
Fish Species
Anglers at Suffolk Stour can expect a variety of fish. Barbel were introduced in 1996, and recent additions by the Environment Agency have increased their numbers. The river is also home to bream, reaching up to 8 lb, carp, chub up to 5 lb 14 oz, perch, pike, roach, and gudgeon. In the downstream stretch from the Sewage Works to Boxted, anglers often catch sizeable bream and carp, with pike also present in good numbers.
Parking Information
Parking is available at three entry points. At the Sewage Works, anglers must use a locked gate with a Caps combination lock, with the river roughly 100 yards away. Another option is parking at Tendring Hall Farm, accessed via a long track, where parking is situated between two single-storey buildings and the river is about half a mile across three fields. These parking areas provide convenient access to the diverse fishing opportunities along the Suffolk Stour.
