Frensham Great & Little Ponds

Key Information
History
Frensham Great and Little Ponds have a storied past, dating back to the 13th century. They were initially created to supply fish to the Bishop of Winchester and his court during their visits to Farnham Castle. Today, these ponds stand as a testament to history while serving as a vibrant sanctuary for wildlife, inviting visitors to explore their enduring charm.
Wildlife
The ponds are teeming with a diverse array of birdlife. Common species like the reed bunting and sedge warbler share space with rarer birds such as the great crested grebe, nightjars, and woodlarks. In warmer months, damselflies and dragonflies flit gracefully over the glistening water. Surrounding the water's edge, you'll find yellow iris, purple loose-strife, and common reeds adding bursts of colour to the serene landscape.
Surroundings
The area around the ponds is a breathtaking heathland, rich with purple heathers, bright yellow gorse, and lush green bracken. Ancient, gnarled oaks and pines are scattered throughout, providing a backdrop of timeless beauty. Numerous footpaths weave through the site, offering ample opportunity to wander and soak in the natural splendour that has been preserved for centuries.
