Fishing Spots

The River Foss in North Yorkshire offers two main fishing sections exclusively for YDAA control members. The Strensall section stretches approximately 1500 yards upstream from the road bridge to the notice board, providing a serene spot for anglers. Over at Towthorpe, both the right and left banks from Towthorpe Bridge to Newstone Bridge are available, ensuring plenty of space to cast your line. These areas are considered some of York Amalgamations’ hidden gems, perfect for those looking to enjoy a quiet day by the water.

Access and Membership

Gaining access to the River Foss is easy, thanks to the convenient public footpath that leads directly to the fishing sections. Club memberships are offered, allowing members to enjoy fishing in these tranquil areas. Joining the club not only grants you access but also connects you with a community of fellow fishing enthusiasts who appreciate the little surprises the river has to offer.

Species Present

The River Foss is home to a variety of fish, including barbel, chub, dace, gudgeon, roach, and pike. While dace and roach are commonly found, barbel have been introduced in recent years and are now packing on weight, ready to surprise the unsuspecting angler. For those targeting larger chub, free lined baits are effective, but for the best results, a light trotting float with maggots, caster, or bread can be more successful. Just be cautious of the numerous pike that love to take hooked fish!
