At Saltburn, the pier remains a popular fishing mark despite being reduced to half its former length due to sea damage and council cutbacks. Anglers can still catch sizeable bags of whiting on flat, calm, frosty nights, especially during February and March. After a significant northerly swell, even bigger cod have been reported.
High water fishing is productive both in summer and winter months. During low tide, the rocks and sandy beach provide excellent fishing opportunities. In summer, crab and fish baits yield the best results, while in winter, worm, crab, fish, and mussel baits can attract cod, whiting, and occasionally bass.
Using appropriate bait is key to a successful fishing trip at New Marske Reservoir. In the warmer months, crab and fish baits are most effective. As the seasons change, switching to worm or mussel bait in winter can help in landing cod and whiting. Occasionally, bass also take the bait, adding variety to your catch.
