River Stour

Key Information
River Sections
The River Stour in Essex stretches for a mile and a half from the second field below Boxted Mill to the downstream border marked by a club sign. The upper part near Langham Pumping Station features a streamy, shallow area with reeds and lilies. Midway, a flume introduces oxygenated waters over large stones, creating a vibrant habitat.
Fish Species
Anglers can find a variety of species along the River Stour. Chub are plentiful, with some individuals reaching up to 4 lb. Bream can be caught towards the top end, with a few specimens up to 7 lb. The river also hosts dace, roach, and gudgeon, while barbel introduced in 2002 can grow up to 11 lb. In the deeper areas near the Lowlift pool, pike have been known to reach sizes of up to 14 lb.
Additional Details
During winter, deeper sections above the flume offer good roach fishing, especially when water flow is higher. The Lowlift pool serves as a prime spot where the river slows and deepens, allowing for productive fishing of chub, bream, perch, carp, and pike. Fishing continues an additional 150 yards beyond where the River Box joins the Stour.
