Key Information

Last updated: 30 January 2025

Ricketts Mere in Essex offers a blend of river and lake fishing, set amidst the picturesque countryside. The three-acre farm lake is home to a variety of fish, thanks to a dedicated stocking program by the fishery staff.

The Lake

At the heart of Ricketts Mere lies the farm lake, where CEMEX’s stunning Sutton strain carp thrive. Initially introduced at around 10lb each, some whopper carp have now grown to over 30lb, supported by the abundant natural food in the water. Tench and true crucians add to the diversity, creating a lively fishing environment.

The River Chelmer

The River Chelmer, stretching 800 metres, is a narrow, fast-flowing section rich with aquatic life. With a weir at its head and a junction with the canal, it forms an ideal habitat for carp, bream, chub, and silverfish. Anglers can enjoy the opportunity to catch a mix of these species on the right days.

Staff Support

Bailiffs and staff are present to ensure a smooth fishing experience. Their presence helps maintain the health of the fishery and assists anglers as needed, fostering a well-managed fishing spot.
