River Journey

The River Cuckmere, managed by the Southdown Angling Association, offers a variety of streams catering to different angling preferences. Originating north of Heathfield, the river swiftly travels southwards before veering west towards the Bull River, its main tributary. This fast-flowing nature, hinted at by its name, is particularly evident in the first four miles as the river cascades down 100 metres. The Cuckmere's course concludes at Exceat, the only undeveloped river mouth in Sussex, where it meets the sea.

Natural Beauty

The river runs across impervious Wealden Clay, giving it a sparkling and dazzling appearance that attracts visitors. The swift currents contribute to its vibrant ecosystem, supporting a range of fish species. Anglers can expect to find bream, carp, chub, dace, eels, gudgeon, perch, pike, roach, and rudd thriving in these waters. The dynamic environment of the River Cuckmere provides a lively habitat for both fish and surrounding wildlife.

Historic Landmarks

Overlooking the river valley is the Long Man of Wilmington, a remarkable 231-foot tall chalk carving that may date back to the sixth century. This ancient figure stands proudly on the east side of the South Downs, adding a historical dimension to the natural landscape. The presence of such landmarks enhances the fishing experience, blending the tranquility of angling with the rich heritage of East Sussex.
