Fishing Areas

The Exeter Ship Canal stretches approximately six miles through Devon, offering several prime fishing locations. Notable spots include The Basin, Clapperbrook, Double Locks, Countess Wear, Lime Kilns, and Swans Nest. These areas are particularly favored for pike fishing, boasting some of the largest specimens in the South West.

Fish Species

Anglers on the Exeter Canal can target a variety of fish, including eels, salmon, and trout. Pike are especially prominent, with catches often reaching up to 30lb, and 20lb pike being a common sight. The canal's diverse ecosystem provides ample opportunities for both novice and experienced fishers.

Permits and Access

Fishing is free between The Basin and Double Locks for coarse fishing enthusiasts. Beyond these sections, a permit from the Exeter & District Angling Association is required and can be obtained from the Angling Centre on Smythen Street or at the Civic Centre Reception. Additionally, anglers aged 12 and over must hold an Environment Agency Rod Fishing Licence to fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish, or eels.
