Watendlath Tarn

Key Information
Getting Here
Watendlath Tarn spans seven acres and lies just a few miles south of Keswick in Cumbria. Your journey begins by crossing Ashness Bridge, renowned for its picturesque views that often grace fridge magnets. While the area attracts many during peak holiday times, anglers can still discover tranquil corners away from the crowds.
Experience
This tarn stands out as the only stocked trout water of its size in the northern half of the national park. It hosts rainbow trout, which are nurtured locally at Seathwaite and arrive weekly, along with generally small wild brown trout. Most of the shoreline is accessible, though some parts can be boggy. For those who prefer a different vantage point, boats are available for an additional fee.
Seasons
Watendlath Tarn is open all year, offering varied fishing experiences across seasons. The early months see a gradual start, peaking from late April to June when seasonal hatches provide excellent surface sport opportunities. Summer months see a slowdown, but early and late in July and August, fishing remains favourable. By September, trout become more active again, and autumn often brings some of the best fishing conditions of the year.
