Ulverston Canal is a haven for anglers seeking a variety of catches. Tench are a favourite quarry here, with some anglers securing bags of quality fish especially early in the season. Bream also reach impressive sizes, providing a satisfying challenge. While carp numbers might be lower, the canal does host some sizeable specimens. Roach fishing shines from late summer through to late autumn, making it a great spot for those targeting this species.
Accessing Ulverston Canal is straightforward with parking available at both ends. Foot access runs along the eastern bank, allowing anglers to explore different sections of the canal. Natural pegs are found near the town end, perfect for a leisurely day by the water. Towards Canal Foot, there are around 60 constructed platforms that can be pre-booked for competitions, offering a dedicated spot for more organised fishing events.
Constructed in 1796, Ulverston Canal stands as the shortest and deepest canal in the country. Managed by the Ulverston Angling Association, the canal stretches just over a mile long and maintains a depth of around 5-6 feet, gradually becoming shallower towards the edges. This historic waterway runs from Canal Head at the Ulverston end to Canal Foot on the Leven estuary, providing a unique and enduring fishing location for enthusiasts.
