Ghyll Head Reservoir

Key Information
Overview
Even in Cumbria's landscape of stunning scenery, Ghyll Head Reservoir distinguishes itself as WADAA's most frequented fishery. Situated in a small elevated valley, it offers views over Windermere, making it an ideal spot for a day's trout fishing. Spanning eleven acres, the reservoir features narrow sections with numerous bays, points, and inlets, adding variety to the fishing experience. Most of the water is accessible from the shore, allowing anglers to cover areas from the deeper sections by the dam to the shallower ends.
Trout Behaviour
Trout at Ghyll Head Reservoir exhibit different behaviours throughout the year. In early seasons, they tend to stay in deeper holes and respond well to mini lures on sinking lines. Come early April, trout move into the shallows to feed on daytime buzzer hatches. During May and June, they can be found throughout the reservoir, but as water temperatures rise in mid-summer, they retreat to deeper waters. In autumn, cooler conditions bring them back to the shallows once more.
Fishing Tips
For those targeting trout, understanding their movement is key. When trout are in deeper areas, mini lures on sinking lines are effective. As they move to shallower regions, adapting your approach can improve your chances. If trout are topping, using dry flies is recommended. However, Ghyll Head Reservoir is renowned for its nymph fishing. Finding the right depth and using three nymphs on a long leader can give you an advantage, especially when fewer fish are visible on the surface.
