Cleabarrow Tarn

Key Information
Restoration Efforts
A few years ago, Cleabarrow Tarn faced significant challenges due to otter predation, leading to the loss of many large carp. In response, WADAA initiated a major restoration project. An otter-proof fence was installed to protect the fish stock, while weed control measures ensured the water remained clear for anglers. Overgrown islands were cleared, and numerous snags were removed to improve fishing conditions. Additionally, existing pegs and walkways have been replaced, revitalising this charming fishery to its former glory.
Fishing Opportunities
Cleabarrow Tarn offers a variety of fish species for anglers. The carp population has been restocked and currently numbers in the low teens, with occasional larger specimens making an appearance. Tench are also present, boasting weights up to 8 lb, and there are several bream reaching the same size. Rudd and a population of golden rudd add to the diversity of fish available. Common baits such as boilies, pellets, meat, sweetcorn, and bread prove effective. Fish are often found near overhanging vegetation and the shoreline, providing ample opportunities for a successful catch.
Facilities and Access
Cleabarrow Tarn is equipped with seven substantial pegs and four prepared bivvy sites for those interested in overnight fishing. Club memberships are offered, allowing access to the fishery exclusively for WADAA members. Parking is limited, with space for about five cars available just off the road bend adjacent to the fishery. Access is straightforward through a gate located 50 yards along the minor road. The fishery is conveniently situated opposite Windermere Golf Club, approximately two miles from Bowness on the B5284 Bowness to Kendal road.
