Airman Pit

Key Information
Overview
Airman Pit has evolved from its origins as a clay pit into a thriving stillwater venue since its acquisition by the SDAA in 1965. Spanning approximately 4 acres, the lake reaches depths of up to 30 feet in some areas. Anglers will find both specimen and pleasure fishing rewarding, with fish often patrolling the reed-lined shallow margins.
Fishing Opportunities
The pit is renowned for its impressive Wels catfish, descendants of those introduced in the UK in 1880 by the Duke of Bedford. These formidable fish can exceed 60lb, making Airman Pit a special spot for club members. Additionally, there is a healthy population of carp, with some specimens reaching 30lb. Pike are also present, particularly in winter, with catches often over 20lb and occasionally surpassing 30lb. Smaller species such as roach, rudd, and tench offer excellent sport for pleasure anglers throughout the year.
Wildlife and Conservation
Designated as a County Wildlife Site, Airman Pit's reed beds provide a habitat for a diverse range of birds and insects. This thriving ecosystem enhances the fishing experience, blending angling with the beauty of nature. Club memberships are available, allowing anglers to enjoy the lake while supporting its conservation efforts and the ongoing management of its abundant wildlife.
