Crescent Lake
History
Crescent Lake began as two ponds, originally dug over 800 years ago by the Cluniac Monks of the nearby Priory for stock purposes. In recent years, these ponds were combined to form a one-acre lake, featuring a large dividing island that serves as a bird sanctuary with no public access.
Facilities
Located in the south-east corner of a 30-acre public park, Crescent Lake offers a range of facilities. Visitors can make use of the nearby toilets and enjoy refreshments at the café during fine weather. For families, there are large playing fields, amusements for children, ornamental gardens, and a museum, providing plenty of activities for a day out. All eight swims around the lake are suitable for the disabled.
Fishing
The lake averages four feet in depth and is home to various fish species, including carp up to 10 lb, eels up to 3 lb, perch up to 2 lb 8 oz, pike, roach, and rudd. Anglers targeting tench can expect to catch 20 to 30 fish in a day, using baits like bread, worm, corn, and cockle for the best results. Public pathways run along the north and south banks, where fishing is not permitted for safety reasons.
