Great Ouse

Reach of the River

Great Ouse stretches over 2,000 metres on the right bank in Bedfordshire, flowing south-easterly before turning south. Starting just below the northern railway viaduct near Clapham Folly and continuing to the next viaduct at the southern end, this section of the river offers a medium-paced waterway for anglers. In the upper part, you’ll find the village of Clapham opposite the river, while further downstream, the opposite bank is lined with fields and woods, with no official fishing permitted there.

Types of Fish

Anglers at Great Ouse can expect to encounter a variety of species. The river is home to chub, reaching up to 6 lb, as well as dace, perch, and roach. Pike are also present, with some specimens weighing up to 19 lb. Bream can sometimes be found, growing up to 6 lb, and tench add to the diversity. There are reports of barbel in the stretch above, adding an extra challenge for those who seek them.

Access Guidelines

Fishing at Great Ouse is relatively quiet, partly due to the walk required to reach the river. It’s important to note that fishing is not allowed in the first field, where a public footpath runs, until 1 September each year. Additionally, anglers must avoid fishing within 30 metres of overhead power lines to ensure safety. These guidelines help maintain the integrity of the fishing experience for everyone.
