Watendlath
The Setting
Watendlath covers seven acres of natural beauty just a few miles south of Keswick. Crossing Ashness Bridge offers views that have adorned countless fridge magnets. During the busy holiday seasons, solitude might be hard to find, but anglers can almost always discover a quiet corner by the water. Outside these peak times, the tarn provides excellent fishing surrounded by perfect landscapes.
Fish Available
This tarn stands as the only stocked trout water of its size in the northern half of the national park, hosting both rainbows and generally smallish wild browns. The rainbows are nurtured locally at Seathwaite and are introduced each week, ensuring fresh catches. While most of the bank is accessible, some areas can be boggy. Additionally, boats are available for hire, offering another way to enjoy the fishing experience.
Fishing Seasons
Fishing at Watendlath follows the typical pattern for upland waters. The early season starts slowly, gaining momentum from late April through June with great surface action to Black Gnat, Hawthorns, and beetles on the right days. Summer months like July and August see a slight slowdown, but by September, the fish become active once more. Autumn often delivers some of the best fishing of the year, making Watendlath a rewarding spot all year round.
